Even though my vote, in the big scheme of things, doesn't do much, I'm sure glad that Susan B. Anthony and all those kick-ass women suffragists changed things to make me able to!
From Wikipedia:
On January 9, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson announced his support of the amendment. The House of Representatives narrowly passed the amendment the next day, but the Senate refused to debate it until October. Because of this, the National Woman's Party urged citizens to vote against anti-suffrage Senators up for reelection in the 1918 midterm elections. Following those elections, most members of Congress were pro-suffrage. On May 21, 1919, the House of Representatives passed the amendment by a vote of 304 to 89 and the Senate followed suit on June 4, by a vote of 56 to 25.
On August 18, 1920, the Tennessee General Assembly, by a one-vote margin, became the thirty-sixth state legislature to ratify the proposed amendment, making it the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. On August 26, 1920, Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the amendment's adoption.
1920!!! That's only 90 years and a couple of months ago. It's amazing the progress our society has made since. And, those of you who know me, know I'm a huge fan of men, so I'm not going to start man-bashing like some all-too-emotional feminists do. President Wilson declared himself a fan of Amendment 19. It's not men who block our progress, but a strange way of thinking and a refusal, subconscious or no, to be unafraid and think outside the box.
So, I'm also grateful for those who stand up for what they believe in and have the tenacity to see their goals through to the end.
